The Darlington Flag Newsletter
by
Jacqueline Kay Hutchinson Hughes...Every
institution with a published history
sooner or later faces a familiar problem, keeping that
history “current.”
The First
Baptist Church of Sumter, SC is no exception.
The author notes in her introduction
that two previous installments have been written on the
history of this church.
These first two installments covered the history of the
church from its origin in 1813
until 1938.
Hughes has compiled from church records and bulletins an update to these
previously published histories.
This history is rich in genealogical content.
Three
examples from 1940 follow:
Jan. 13, 1940- Mrs. John Andrews died in the City today and was buried in the Sumter Cemetery.
Jan.
17, 1940- Deacon W. Frank Carr died
in this City today. He was received into this Church by letter from Florence,
S.C. Feb. 24, 1901. He was ordained
Deacon of this Church June 18, 1933 and will be buried in the Sumter Cemetery
tomorrow, January 18.
Feb.
8, 1940- Mrs. J.L. Jordan died in
this City today and will be buried in Bennettsville, S.C. tomorrow, February 9.
Hughes as done an
admirable job of updating the church’s history.
This latest
installment of the church’s history will complement earlier
efforts well. 438 pages,
